“I had absolutely no visibility whatsoever. I would have never made light of a person with a disability and I’m profoundly sorry,” he said.
“I saw the coin flick out and went out on a tangent of jocularity. It was mucking around. You get beaten up in the media on these things but not half as much as you beat yourself up.”
As the comments sparked outrage on Saturday, McGuire stood down from his TV football commitments for the rest of the weekend. He immediately apologised if anyone had taken offence to his ridiculing of Banham, declaring he was “devastated” when he learnt of the severity of the situation.
Sydney Swans chair Andrew Pridham, who on Saturday morning called for the AFL to take action against McGuire, has said he believed the apology was genuine and the matter was now between the Collingwood president and Banham.
