Tony Abbott's 'voodoo' Brexit economics take another expert pasting

London: Former prime minister Tony Abbott has come in for another pasting from trade and economics experts, after accusing Britain of “losing its nerve” on Brexit by trying to avoid a ‘no-deal’ divorce from the European Union.

Days after Theresa May changed her Brexit policy to lessen the likelihood of a dangerous no-deal Brexit, Abbot used a column in Spectator magazine to criticise the withdrawal deal May struck with the EU last year, saying to go through with it would “represent failure on an epic scale”.

He downplayed the risks of no-deal as an alternative, saying the real problem was a “neurotic anxiety of the official political class about leaving the European project”.

“A disorderly Brexit would mean, at most, a few months of inconvenience,” Abbott wrote. “Perhaps some modest transition costs. But these difficulties would quickly pass.”
