Captains are popularly drawn from several categories: the star player. This is the Nat Fyfe, Scott Pendlebury, Trent Cotchin, Paddy Cripps skipper who is captain because, well because of course he is captain. He is (normally) the best player in the team and leads by what he does. Before this bunch think Chris Judd, Nick Riewoldt, Michael Voss. He leads because he can turn the game on the field when it needs turning. These best-player leaders tend to be midfielders who can inject themselves into games when it matters. He speaks well, presents well, is the wholesome complete picture.

There is the big-forward captain. This is the Tex Walker, Tom Lynch captain. It’s a variation on the above but they do it from in front of the ball where they take control of games. They have the strut and swagger to make their team walk taller.

There is the grizzled onballer captain. This is the Joel Selwood, Cal Ward, Jack Viney who gets first hands on the ball and leads by brutal example of overt courage and aggression. They control the game from where it begins. When the opposition gets a run on they are there to slow the game, to grab the ball, to absorb punishment and refuse to cede ground. They are the None Shall Pass leaders.

Then there is the Stratton captain. This is the throw-yourself-on-a-grenade half-back flanker. This is the Phil Davis, Jarryn Geary type who emerged from predecessors like Luke Hodge, Glenn Archer, Tom Harley and Nick Maxwell – who do the things that set the tone of how far a player should be prepared to go on the field. They are the player who unlike other positions sacrifices self for team. They are the player who one week plays on Cyril and the next plays on Jack Riewoldt. They see the game in front and control it from behind. They take the risk to leave their man and get a spoil in, they lay the tackle or rush the behind to save the game.
