“We’re just looking at possibilities again where we’re going to base ourselves as well. Obviously looking in Europe, I want to minimise the travel not only for the girls when they get there but the girls from America when they come across,” Milicic said after Australia’s 2-0 friendly win over New Zealand on Thursday night. “We’ve been working on that for about a week now. We’ve got a few options and I’m hoping to confirm a couple of sites by the end of this week so myself and the team manager can go over and have a look at them.”


His first match in charge of the national team was a comfortable victory over the Football Ferns in their opening game of the Cup of Nations, which also features South Korea and Argentina.


The Matildas had to overcome a slow start against New Zealand which saw Sam Kerr specifically man-marked in what could be a tactic other teams could use at the World Cup.


“I hope so because it opened up other people’s passages for passes,” Kerr said. “It’s just about being smart about it. For me, it was about drawing people out, drawing the centre-back out, she was obviously following me and it allowed Caitlin [Foord] and [Emily Gielnik] to do their thing on the wing.”
