The Movistar rider snatched the overall lead with a solo win in the 14th stage and retained the pink jersey after Sunday’s final stage, a 17-kilometre individual time trial won by American Chad Haga.

Italian Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida), chasing a third title, finished second overall 1 min 5 secs behind Carapaz, with Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) taking third place 2 mins 30 sec off the pace.

Carapaz’s value will skyrocket after the win – his contract with Spanish outfit Movistar runs out at the end of the year, placing him in prime position to negotiate a more lucrative deal.
