Winx’s greatness isn’t measured these days by her 30-race winning streak, her 22 group 1 victories or even the 71 group 1 winners she has beaten – it is in those who aren’t there to take her on.


The best milers in the country were in Melbourne last week, where they had the chance to win a group 1 without facing the imposing figure of Winx swooping down the centre of the track.

She had six rivals  in the Chipping Norton Stakes and only one – Happy Clapper – from outside the Chris Waller stable.


“I have seen what taking her on does to horses, it can flatten them a bit,” Waller said. “She just draws that little bit more out of them than you would think because they are out of their comfort zone.”
