“It feels pretty awesome and it’s a massive privilege,” Stratton said.

“But then it’s back to business today, after I’ve done all this media stuff that I’m not too fond about doing … just back to footy life and into games pretty soon.”

Stratton is one of several senior players at the Hawks who will miss Sunday’s game against the Brisbane Lions to be played at Moreton Bay but he is expected to play against Richmond in Tasmania in round two.

The Hawks are also resting vice-captain Jack Gunston and the other four members of the leadership group, Ben McEvoy, Jaeger O’Meara, Isaac Smith and Liam Shiels. Shiels signed a new contract extension before Christmas extending his time with the club until the end of 2022.

The new Hawks’ skipper is not the only AFL captain set to come out of contract at the end of the season.
