Global talent scheme fails to issue visas as startups 'crippled'

“If you’re a startup that’s not got all that much money, paying the lodgement fee and Skilling Australians Fund levy can run between $7,000 and $10,000. For them, paying $10,000 to get someone who they are saying is highly skilled, that can be crippling,” he says.


“If you provide some other benefit like a cost saving, it may incentivise people to pursue this route.”


Eight visas have been granted for the entrepreneur stream, which allows business founders that have funding for their idea to commercialise their business in Australia.


StartupAus has long argued that the pilot scheme was derailed by leadership turmoil in Canberra. In its Startup Crossroads report last December, it said “the disruption of the leadership spill, and
a Cabinet reshuffle that saw Alan Tudge shift from the Ministerial position overseeing the GTS, caused some delay” in getting the program up and running.
