Canberra clan accused of dodgy cash and tax dealings

It hasn’t been a happy couple of years for a Canberra clan.


On Friday Isaac Struss told a Federal Court examination that he was a simple carpenter from Canberra, who sold his construction business which he ran with his cousin Tristan Waters to Waters’ mother in 2016 because it was all too stressful for the tradesman.


However, corporate records show that exactly one month later his aunt Anna Waters was declared bankrupt and she promptly left the country leaving behind a trail of debts.

On 26 May 2016, the day after Mrs Waters was declared bankrupt, her son Tristan left the country. In April 2017 Australian Federal Police seized 1280 kilograms of cocaine, the second largest in Australian history. In January Tristan Waters, 35, was arrested in Serbia in relation to the estimated $1.5 billion drug haul.


Liquidators of Hartford Investments a company run by Peter Larcombe, the alleged mastermind of the $150 million fraud against the Australian Tax Office, were keen to examine both Tristan Waters and his mother Anna over mysterious movements of large sums of money which went from Mr Larcombe’s company into entities associated with them.
