The NSW Liberal Party has been ordered to repay nearly $250,000 after money given to the party by two wealthy candidates at the last state election was found to have been illegal political donations.

A former political ally of Salim Mehajer on Auburn council, property developer Ronney Oueik, donated a total of $150,000 to a party bank account to fund his unsuccessful campaign for the state seat of Auburn at the 2015 election.

Glenn Brookes, the sitting Liberal MP for the seat of East Hills, paid $50,000 into the same party account.

“The amounts paid into the [Liberal] account were unlawful political donations,” Supreme Court Justice Christine Adamson found, in a case brought against the party by the NSW Electoral Commission.

Taking into account interest owed, the party is required to repay the commission just over $240,000 in a Supreme Court judgment made public this week after a hearing earlier this month.
