How James Magnussen's chirp helped spur Kyle Chalmers to Olympic glory

Athletes always say they don’t read what’s going on in the press but that quote couldn’t help but catch the eye of Chalmers. As he prepares to try and win his first 100m freestyle national crown, he said Magnussen’s words had spurred him on to eventual greatness.

“He always like to have his word in the media. I remember in 2016, he said I wasn’t a threat to him, which spurred me on to swim as best as I could in trials. I love hearing those things in the media because it does motivate you,” Chalmers said.

Chalmers, Magnussen and McEvoy again loom as the big three at the Commonwealth Games trials, with the 100m sprints for men and women topping the highlight list for day two.

All three can make the team but new players, like Queensland teenager Jack Cartwright, could yet leave one of them on the sidelines for the Games in April.
