Victorians are paying far too much for gas because of the Andrews government’s stubborn refusal to allow onshore exploration, Australia’s competition watchdog says.


Victorians will pay an extra $2 to $4 per gigajoule because of a looming local supply shortfall that will require more gas to be trucked from Queensland this year and beyond, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said on Wednesday.

The independent authority attacked Labor’s moratorium on onshore gas exploration, arguing the ban was standing in the way of opportunities to boost Victoria’s gas supply and was pushing up bills for households, industry and electricity generators.


The Andrews government last year imposed a moratorium on onshore gas exploration until 2020, and permanently banned fracking for environmental reasons.


The ACCC chairman, Rod Sims, said he would not join the debate about the environmental impact of gas exploration, but said it was a fact consumers on Australia’s east coast paid significantly more for gas than most Asian markets.
