A man has been found dead in a car that crashed after the driver sped off when police tried to pull the vehicle over.

Officers had tried to intercept the car on Overton Road in Seaford about 1am on Sunday. A short time later they found the car had crashed into a pole near the corner of Govan Street and Bardia Avenue.

They found a man dead in the back seat. The man has not yet been identified. A 24-year-old female passenger from Frankston was found nearby and was taken to The Alfred hospital with hip and chest injuries. She is in a stable condition and is assisting police with inquiries.

The alleged driver of the car, a 28-year-old Carrum Downs man, fled on foot when he saw police. After a police search of the area, he was found in a nearby street about 4am and arrested.

An investigation into the incident will be overseen by Professional Standards Command.
