The team was due to fly home at 1.05pm on Sunday with Virgin Australia, but had to nurse the inevitable hangovers at the airport for a little longer than they expected.

However, just before 2.30pm the team had boarded the plane and were about to take off.

A statement released by Virgin said the airline was experiencing a disruption to its check-in systems because of an Optus technical issue.

“We are manually checking passengers in, and therefore there will be delays to flights today,” it said. “We recommend that anyone who is due to fly with us this afternoon allow extra time for check-in at the airport.

“We are working with Optus to ensure the issue is rectified as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologise for any delays and inconvenience this has caused our guests, and will provide further details as soon as possible.”
