Manchester United crush CSKA Moscow

Romelu Lukaku has scored a double in Manchester United’s 4-1 thrashing of CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.

City’s Aguero, scorer of six goals in six league appearances this season, had been attending a concert in Amsterdam on his day off when he was involved in a road incident.

“The taxi I was riding made a wrong turn and crashed against a pole. It was a very heavy slam but seatbelts prevented it from being worse,” he said on Twitter after returning to Manchester.

“It’s a broken rib. Hurts, but I’m fine, fully focused on recovery. Thank you all.”

England’s Press Association reported Aguero was likely to be sidelined for two to four weeks but may return against Stoke City on October 14.

Manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to reporters before Aguero had seen club doctors, said the player was definitely out of Saturday’s game between league leaders City and champions Chelsea.

He also cast doubt on Aguero travelling to Argentina for World Cup qualifiers next month.

“Exactly how many days he will be off, I don’t know right now,” he said, adding that he had “no problem” with Aguero being in Amsterdam.

“I think the players have to rest mentally and physically. They can enjoy their lives. I want my players to have fun,” he said. “If they decide to go there, they decide to go there. It is OK for me.”

Meanwhile Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has bracketed Paul Pogba’s injury as “long-term” – comparing it to those Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo are recovering from.

Mourinho has repeatedly claimed not to know how bad Pogba’s injury is as the club continued to assess him in-house, as well as seeking specialist advice.

The severity of the hamstring issue that caused the 24-year-old to limp off early in the club’s Champions League return against Basel has been shrouded in mystery.

Ahead of last-placed Crystal Palace’s visit, Mourinho is still unwilling to put a timescale on the injury, but 17 days on from the France international’s setback the manager has revealed it is a long-term issue.

“He’s injured, he cannot play tomorrow and it’s not an injury that I can have the hope like I have with (Antonio) Valencia or (Phil) Jones,” Mourinho said of Pogba.

“I have the hope to see them in training and to have a positive answer, so long- term injuries I don’t speak about them.

“So Ibra and Pogba and Rojo, these players I don’t think about them.”

City had already been dealt an injury blow this week when defender Benjamin Mendy was found to have ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Guardiola said the French international would have surgery on Friday and be out until April.

City captain Vincent Kompany is also some way off returning from injury, despite being named in Belgium’s squad.

“Kompany? No way. He didn’t make one training session with us since one month ago,” he said.

“I spoke with (Belgium manager) Roberto Martinez who told me he’s travelling there to make a meeting with the Belgian doctor but he’s coming back. Of course he cannot play with Belgium.”

Pogba, Rojo and Ibrahimovic are joined on the sidelines at Manchester United by Michael Carrick, while Jones and Valencia are to be assessed having missed the midweek Champions League match at CSKA Moscow.

Marouane Fellaini also missed out with an ankle injury that is still under assessment, while Anthony Martial went off in the 4-1 win in Russia.

“We have to train and to make decisions after training, but I hope some of the players that couldn’t play in Moscow (can play),” he said.

“I hope maybe not all of them but some can recover.

“They were out and tomorrow some will be out.

“What I am saying is that from all the injuries we have, I hope we can have some players available tomorrow.”

City are level on 16 points with Manchester United at the top of the table with Chelsea in third place on 13, and Aguero is one goal away from equalling Eric Brooks’ all-time club record of 177 goals in all competitions.
