Passion for Aboriginal art opens doors

It was while running the now-well-known Prairie hotel in the Flinders Ranges, using his experience in finance, natural style and networking ability, that Rasheed had the opportunity to realise his dream.
It allowed him to spend time in central Australia, Mt Swan station, MacDonald Downs and Utopia,
meeting artists and learning of their culture and set up an outpost of Utopian Aboriginal art. In 2017, he opened the Bangalow gallery.
“I also did a crash course reading everything I could find and much learning on the job,” says Rasheed. “To run a successful gallery, you need to be constantly expanding your knowledge by following international art markets and trade fairs, networking with those in the industry and, of
course, be completely crazy about art.”
Agree Double Bay gallery owners Frances Keevil, an art consultant and curator, and Lynn Westacott,
a film and creative industries executive: “You have to love art, as well as be a people person. An art
gallery is all about relationships whether with artists, clients, colleagues or associated businesses.”
The Frances Keevil Gallery, which opened in 2006, represents established artists such as Stephen
Trebilcock, Andrew Baines and Sue Meyer, as well as exhibiting emerging artists including Loribelle
Spirovski and Bahman Kermany.
