Ciaron Maher gets back to 'Bool roots with fourth Brierly win

Maher contended that the leading horse, Newbury, had veered in sharply and had caused Pateman to take evasive action. Stewards slapped Pateman with a five meeting ban for careless riding, and another for overuse of the whip, but were left satisfied that Gold Medals – last year’s Grand Annual winner who could get a re-match on Thursday – had been given a fair chance to breach what was a 1.5-length gap on the line.

“What an unbelievable ride by Steve, he saved all the ground, when he was last jumping the first I thought, ‘Oh God, that wasn’t the plan’, but he never went around a horse. He is a master, he did a great job getting down to the weight,” he said.

After the jubilation, Maher had eyes only for his horse as he considers a run in Thursday’s 5500-metre staying test.

“I didn’t have a runner in the Annual last year and I would like to this year but we will see how he pulls up,” the trainer said. “He is well weighted in the Annual but we just have to see how he is. We will get him down to the beach and see how he is. He is fit and well, and he is really enjoying jumping.”

Earlier in the day Maher and Eustace may have unearthed a feature contender of the future when Euroman won the maiden hurdle.
