”I have said to all the parties involved, agent, clubs, I just want to finish this season first, concentrate on one thing at a time and whatever comes in the summer, comes.”
De Laet ended up as City’s leading scorer with seven goals this season, tying for the golden boot award with Riley McGree.
His status was as much about City’s lack of a cutting edge without Fornaroli as it was about Joyce’s ability to improvise and find ways to get goals – but they wouldn’t have come unless de Laet, who was signed to be an attacking full-back, didn’t have the right instincts when played up front.
”I don’t think I would have expected it [to be top scorer] ever as a defender,” he said, suggesting that he won’t have to be the main man during the finals.
”We keep the ball really well. We do get the chances, it’s been more putting them in the back of the net, that’s been the problem.
