Those steps involved dispatching Cricket Australia’s high performance regulator Pat Howard, and Iain Roy, the organisation’s senior legal counsel and integrity head, on “the first plane out” to conduct an investigation.

“Once they’re gone James sorts out the rest of us, board members, his staff back in Australia, then he’s on the plane as well.

“At the end of all that, in the space of about 72-80 hours … by Wednesday night an investigation has been done … James is over there, he’s spoken to all the players, Iain Roy has interviewed all the players and support staff,” he said.

“We come up with findings, charges and sanctions. And at the end of it I found it very disappointing that all James Sutherland got out of it was ‘He didn’t call them cheats’.”

The tensions over the administration of Australian cricket were on display on the Channel Nine panel show, which featured another former Australian captain, Ian Chappell.
