A tale of two dogs

This is a tale of two dogs, both of them mine.

One of them, Scout, took his final breath on the beach at sunset on a perfect early-autumn night a year ago.

It was March 7. Unknown to me that day, across town five days earlier, another mutt had wrestled her way into the world. She was born on March 2, is now known as Miss Maudie, and she has been wrestling her way into the world ever since – once in spectacularly public fashion.

This is in keeping with Scout’s late example.

Scout, a Staffordshire terrier I’d had since he was eight weeks old, first appeared in print as a puppy, when I included his constant presence at my deskbound feet in the thank-you section of a book I’d written. As years went on, Scout led the kind of public life dogs often lead in the age of social media – his adventures and misadventures chronicled by his over-sharing owner.
