Rise and shine: Make the most of mornings

Last night, as we slumbered, the time-keeping elves in our smart devices helpfully pushed our digital displays back by an hour. If you’re an owner of an analogue clock, then you gotta do that yourself, because daylight saving is over, people. That’s right, autumn is now well under way, stripping the leaves from the trees, those nocturnal comedic creatures have commandeered the city for another glorious Melbourne International Comedy Festival and nine-to-fivers start getting home in the dark.

But at the other end of the day, with the sun rising an hour earlier, there’ll now be more light in the mornings. So how can Melburnians make the most of the city in those first hours of the day? M Mag went investigating all the options for early birds.

FRESH BAKED BAGEL BREAKFAST

Bakers are up well before the dawn and Zev Forman is no different. From 7am, you can treat yourself to the freshest bagels in town at 5Dime, tucked in 16 Katherine Place, off Flinders St. “It’s probably the best time to come in and get a bagel because they’re hot out of the iron. We pull bagels out through the day but you can always be sure you’re going to get a hot bagel if you’re here at 7am,” he says. A New Jersey native, Forman’s boiled and baked bagels “are as traditional as you can get” in terms of the process. While other mass-produced bagels take an hour from mixing dough to hitting the oven, Forman’s take 48 hours. Some of the flavours are less traditional and toppings range from classics like PBJ or cream cheese and cured meats plus they have a range of vegan options. Forman’s fave? “The everything bagel – garlic, onion, sesame, poppy and seasalt. To me, that’s a bagel.”
