That means where there is an imminent threat of physical harm or danger to the student or others.


The guidelines also state that any action taken must be considered “reasonable” in all the circumstances and that every effort should be made to prevent using physical restraint.


Restraint should end as soon as the immediate danger has passed.


Disciplining or punishing a student for behavioural issues such as disrespect, non-compliance or insubordination are not considered strong enough reasons to use restraint.


Coercion, retaliation or convenience are also insufficient grounds.
