The final report from the banking royal commission is set to be handed over to the government ahead of its public release.

Financial services royal commissioner Kenneth Hayne QC will deliver the report to Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove in Canberra on Friday.

Bureacrats will be in overdrive over the weekend preparing for Treasurer Josh Frydenberg to release the report’s findings on Monday at 4.10pm.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack says he’s looking forward to the report, but says credit squeeze may be an issue.

“We need to back our small businesses,” he told 2CC radio.

“The government is doing it. The banking sector needs to do it.

“The credit unions and Customer Owned Banking Association members – they always stand ready, particularly in regional areas, to fill those gaps where banks can’t or won’t or don’t.”

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says the vital role banks play in the economy shouldn’t be used as an alibi for bad conduct or criminality.

Mr Bowen says the government has “mismanaged banking policy”, noting that Prime Minister Scott Morrison voted dozens of times against a royal commission.

“And now it appears the Treasurer wants to deny Australians the right to see the final report when it is received on Friday,” he told AAP.
