    A half-century from Temba Bavuma helped South Africa push their total to 400 on the second day in Johannesburg, where Australia picked up only one wicket in the opening session. The South Africans had started the day on 313 for 6 and they added 87 in the session for the loss only of Quinton de Kock, and at lunch the total was 400 for 7, with Bavuma on 61 and Vernon Philander on 6.


    Bavuma and de Kock put on 85 for the seventh wicket, moving the score along steadily for much of the morning. A solid bowling performance from Australia brought little more joy than the occasional play and miss, or edge that fell short, until Nathan Lyon found a way to end the partnership when de Kock was on 39 from 74 balls.


    De Kock tried to force one from Lyon through the leg side with a cross-bat stroke but when the ball turned sharply he appeared to check his stroke, however all he managed to do was sky a catch that was taken at mid-on. It left South Africa at 384 for 7, but by the lunch break Philander and Bavuma had ensured no further loss for South Africa.


    Bavuma moved to his half-century from his 120th delivery and had been rarely troubled by the bowling, and if he has enough lower-order support he will aim to turn his start into the second hundred of his Test career. Bavuma played a sensible game but occasionally became more adventurous, as when he lifted Pat Cummins over extra cover for an aerial four.
