A NSW man charged over the murder of police accountant Curtis Cheng tried to have an Islamic State flag made before the attack, a court has heard.


The black material Raban Alou allegedly provided for the flag was shown to NSW Supreme Court justice Peter Johnson during the 20-year-old’s sentence hearing on Tuesday.


Crown prosecutor Paul McGuire SC said Alou used the code word “jumper” when requesting the flag but it could be seen from looking at the material that it wasn’t suitable for a jumper.


Alou is facing a scheduled five-day hearing after pleading guilty to aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring a terrorist act by Farhad Jabar Khalil Mohammad, who fatally shot Mr Cheng outside NSW Police Headquarters in Parramatta in 2015.


A convicted rapist has been sentenced to life for murdering West Australian teenager Hayley Dodd almost 20 years ago.

According to the Crown statement of facts, Alou provided 15-year-old Mohammad with the murder weapon at a nearby mosque less than an hour before the killing on October 2.


Mr Cheng died instantly when the teenager shot him in the back of the head at close range as he left work.


Mohammad then yelled “Allahu Akhbar” as he shot at the police building and in the air, before he was killed in an exchange of gunfire.


Alou later praised the teenager’s actions and said he would be given paradise because that was the reward for a martyr, according to the Crown facts.


The sentence hearing, which has been attended by Mr Cheng’s family, is scheduled to continue in Parramatta for another three days.
