An eight-month-old baby girl has allegedly been raped in Delhi, according to Indian media.

The baby is in a critical but stable condition in a local hospital while police have arrested her cousin who is in his 20s, the Times of India reported.

“The infant’s parents had left her to the care of the mother of the accused as they had to go to work,” the newspaper said.

“The (accused) took the child to a room on the top floor of the house on the pretext of playing with her and sexually assaulted her.”

The newspaper said when the baby’s mother returned home at night, she found the child crying and severely injured.

“She immediately rushed her to the hospital where doctors confirmed sexual assault and informed the police,” it said.

The baby reportedly underwent a three-hour operation and is still on ventilator support.

The girl’s cousin had been arrested and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, meaning he could face a life sentence, according to the Press Trust of India.

The accused reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Delhi Women’s Commission chief Swati Maliwal – who visited the infant in hospital – tweeted she felt “totally numb”.

“What to do? How can Delhi sleep today when (an) 8 month baby has been brutally raped in (the) capital? Have we become so insensitive or we have simply accepted this as our fate?” she tweeted.

A UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2014 said one in three rape victims in India was a minor and expressed alarm over the widespread sexual abuse of children.

In December of last year there had been a “huge spike in the rape of children” in India, the Indian Express reported.

“According to the National Crime Records Bureau data for 2016, incidents of rape of children have increased by over 82 per cent compared to 2015,” the newspaper said.

“It is for the first time that such a sharp increase in sexual assaults on children has been registered.”
