'Disgusting': Anger in India after eight-month-old baby allegedly raped

An outpouring of anger and grief has gripped India after an the baby was allegedly raped in Delhi on Sunday.


The baby remains in a critical but stable condition in a local hospital, according to the Times of India.


Her cousin, who is in his 20s, has been arrested over the incident. 


Swati Jai Hind, the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, has led the calls for immediate reforms to the the country’s judicial system. 


Visiting the infant in hospital on Tuesday, Ms Maliwal slammed the system as “impotent” after questioning whether India had become so “insensitive” that it accepted these sorts of acts. 



“8 month old rape survivor still on life support. Met her again-devastating 2 see her crying in pain. Today is Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary,” she wrote on Twitter.


“If he would hv [sic] been alive, he wud hv [sic] felt so ashamed. R [sic] system is impotent. If rape of 8 month baby won’t [sic] bring reforms, nothing will!”


There is growing anger in India against sexual violence.

Women and men in India have consistently campaigned for stricter laws and protection against sexual assault, especially following the 2012 gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a Delhi bus.


In December, there had been a “huge spike in the rape of children” in India, the Indian Express reported.


“According to the National Crime Records Bureau data for 2016, incidents of rape of children have increased by over 82 per cent compared to 2015,” the newspaper said.


The incident on Sunday led to an outpouring of grief and anger from Indians on social media.
