SpaceX owner and Tesla founder Elon Musk has delivered on his promise to create a flamethrower, selling nearly $6.2 million worth.

Last year in December, as a joke Musk said if The Boring Company sold more than 50,000 limited edition baseball caps it would sell flamethrowers to the public.

After selling the allocation, on Saturday, Musk promoted his flamethrower on Twitter claiming it would be handy for “roasting nuts” and “when the zombie apocalypse happens”.

“Also, I want to be clear that a flamethrower is a super terrible idea. Definitely don’t buy one. Unless you like fun,” he wrote on Instagram.

On Tuesday Musk tweeted 10,000 flamethrowers, at $617 each, have been pre-ordered taking the estimated total earnings to $6,170,000.

Musk has also changed his Twitter bio to “Zombie defender”.

Customers also had the opportunity to purchase a fire extinguisher for a cool $37.

While some social media users were sceptical about the legality of selling flamethrowers, Musk claimed: “ATF says any flamethrower with a flame shorter than 10 ft is A-ok.”

“Our design is max fun for least danger. I’d be way more scared of a steak knife.”

The US has relaxed laws – compared to Australia where it’s illegal – when it comes to the purchasing and ownership of a flamethrower. It is legal in the majority of states in the US.

Musk founded car manufacturing company Tesla and aerospace rocket manufacturer SpaceX.
