The NSW senior detective critically injured by an accused sex offender has briefly opened his eyes in a Sydney hospital and communicated with his family before being placed under heavy sedation.
Detective sergeant John Breda was stabbed during a violent confrontation with Nick Newman, 33, in the Maroubra Junction Hotel’s beer garden in Sydney’s east on Australia Day.
“It’s a serious injury and he’s certainly not out of the woods yet,” NSW Police Commander Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec told ABC’s 7.30.
“He’s certainly got a long way to go and it’s a day-by-day process”.
Newman stabbed Det Sgt Breda twice before being fatally gunned down by two other officers on Friday afternoon.
The 45-year-old senior detective was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery.
Police on Tuesday say while Det Sgt Breda’s condition “continued to improve” he is still listed as serious but stable.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday said her thoughts and prayers were with Det Sgt Breda and his family.
“The police force has my full confidence in terms of getting to the bottom of what occurred and hopefully we get some positive news in regards to the policeman’s recovery,” she told reporters in Sydney.
NSW Police Minister Troy Grant jumped in his car and drove to Sydney from Dubbo after hearing about the incident to visit the hospital on Saturday.
Newman’s mother, Alicia, says she hopes Det Sgt Breda recovers and that she is sorry for the actions of her son who has battled mental illness for 20 years.
