One friend dubbed it the “Rooney Remorse”. It’s that overwhelming feeling of sadness at finishing Irish novelist Sally Rooney’s Normal People. And judging by how often the book has appeared in my Instagram feed – 27 times and counting – the remorse is spreading.

Normal People was long-listed for the 2018 Man Booker prize and tells the “will they, won’t they” love story of Marianne and Connell, who grew up in a small western Irish town. From a wealthy, unloving family, Marianne is deeply unpopular at high school and, surprisingly, entirely unmoved by this fact.

Connell is handsome, well-liked and plays on the school football team. His mother also cleans Marianne’s family home, which is how they meet. In high school, they begin a clandestine relationship; their friendship and occasional romance continues when both move to attend Dublin’s prestigious Trinity College, the author’s alma mater.
