'Major' damage after severe magnitude-7 earthquake in Alaska

An intense earthquake struck the Anchorage, Alaska, area on Friday morning, causing severe shaking and triggering fears of a tsunami.


The magnitude-7 quake occurred around 8.30am, local time, the epicentre just north of Anchorage. Moments later, the National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for Cook Inlet and the southern Kenai Peninsula, however it was later cancelled.

The Anchorage Police Department said there was “major infrastructure damage” across the city, which is home to more than 294,000 people.


“Many homes and buildings are damaged,” the department said in a statement Friday morning. “Many roads and bridges are closed. Stay off the roads if you don’t need to drive.”
