Today’s issue is terrific [November 17]. Taking number one spot was the article about ageing. I “live” in a retirement home and it’s spot-on. I should not grumble because if I was in Africa or Asia, I’d be left on the street to fend for myself until being swept up along with other rubbish. Somehow I never saw the “endgame” being played out thus. Brian Parker, Springwood, NSW

Richard Roe paints a bleak picture. My own experience of residential care in an affluent Melbourne suburb is much more positive. I’m an 84-year-old retired pathologist, physically unable and unwilling to live alone. Disease and death defined my professional life. Ageing is inevitable, inexorable and interesting. AAA rating for ageing: Anticipate, Adapt, Accept. Peter Thomson, Ivanhoe, VIC

“This is only a plane ride away”

At Australian Doctors International (ADI) we’ve had a spotlight on the health issues facing the remotest communities in Papua New Guinea since 2001, and we are pleased to see you draw the public’s attention to it [November 17]. In September, after growing concern about the health issues facing the community in Mougulu [in western PNG], ADI secured a small parcel of funding from the Australian Government to facilitate a pilot health patrol by an Australian volunteer doctor to work alongside the healthcare workers in Mougulu and Adumari. We found malnutrition and respiratory diseases, and our doctor assisted in the delivery of three babies in as many days. Sadly, PNG’s health system is struggling under the burdens placed upon it, coupled with remoteness and scarcity of funds. Our volunteer doctor found hardworking healthcare workers caring for their remote communities despite the challenges, and ambitions to do more. Klara Henderson, CEO, ADI Seaforth, NSW
