Uneasy ‘ceasefire’ for Labor as Left tightens its grip

Ms Green has told party members she would base herself in Townsville if selected, in alignment with a 2016 commitment by Labor to base senators in regional Queensland.

But concerns have been raised about the way the vote has been run, with accusations other candidates had insufficient opportunity to campaign.

It’s unclear whether Mr Shorten will directly address the outcome of the vote in his speech and attempt to heal divisions, or whether he will focus on his plan to win the next federal election which must be called by May 2019.

Whatever he decides to do, senior insiders say it is clear the party’s powerful Left faction, boasting eight cabinet members and headed up by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, has the numbers and firepower to outgun the Right (AWU) faction with its six cabinet members, headed by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

It also has the numbers to defeat any motions the centrist Old Guard (Unity) faction with its four cabinet members might wish to move.
