Mr Bandt also accused Mr Dutton of potentially misleading the Parliament.
“On the face of it, Peter Dutton may have misled Parliament when answering my question,” he said. “Given reports suggesting he has a personal connection with the employer of an au pair, he urgently needs to explain himself.”
Fairfax Media has contacted Mr Dutton’s office for a response. Earlier, a spokeswoman said the minister always considered cases on their merits, and “any suggestion cases are determined on any other basis, including whether he knew the individual who referred the matter, is completely false”.
Mr Dutton also faces questions – and a Senate inquiry – over his intervention to stop the deportation of another au pair who had previously worked for relatives of AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan.
Mr McLachlan confirmed on Friday he had a staffer contact Mr Dutton’s office on behalf of his cousin Callum MacLachlan, a South Australian pastoralist, whose au pair was detained in 2015.
