Newly appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marise Payne, said in a statement that the Australian government continued to provide Mr Ricketson full consular assistance.
“Mr Ricketson is subject to legal proceedings under Cambodian law and must now consider his response to the court’s decision using the avenues open to him under Cambodian law,” she said. “The Australian government will consider what further appropriate support we can provide after that time.”
Mr Ricketson wrote graphically of the conditions in the Prey Sar jail in the Herald in March. He told of 146 cell-mates and toilets that were no more than a trench in the floor without running water. Support comes from his son Jesse, who has moved to Cambodia with girlfriend Alex, who visits with fresh fruit twice a week.

Rob Ricketson, James’ younger brother, said: “We are devastated at the term of the imprisonment and the extra kicker is that, like you guys, he has got all his camera gear, sound equipment; they have taken the lot, they have confiscated everything and that’s part of his profession.”
