A North Melbourne townhouse that was the scene of an out-of-control teen party where police cars were smashed was originally booked online for five guests.

Melbourne-based property management company Roomerang has been left counting the cost of the damage, which is in the thousands of dollars, while Victoria Police’s African-Australian taskforce say they will prioritise the incident in their meeting on Tuesday night.

Up to 50 youths, mainly of African appearance, trashed the $1.2 million Shands Lane apartment about 2am on Sunday.

Police were called after a noise complaint and when they asked the youths to leave, some of them pelted officers with objects and vandalised their cars, forcing the officers to retreat to safety.
