Dragons beat Roosters on day when result shouldn't matter ... but does

It certainly meant something to the Dragons. Their 24-8 win cements their place at the top of the ladder. More than that, it came against the Roosters, a genuine premiership contender. Maybe they really are the real deal.

There is so much to like about St George Illawarra so far this season: the control of halfback Ben Hunt, the poise of Gareth Widdop, the 80 minutes from hooker Cameron McInnes, the savagery of their pack, the entertaining brand of footy they are playing.

“These days are special,” McGregor said afterwards. “We had an opportunity to go and show gratitude by playing. We certainly didn’t let anyone down, with the courage we showed. Yeah, a lot of ticks today. I know we’re a different football team this year.”

The tick that McGregor liked the most was that the win followed a five-day turnaround, following a loss to the Warriors in Auckland.

Last season, the Dragons failed to win a match with five days off in between. So far this season, they’ve done it twice.
