If you had to guess at the Victorian postcodes where you’d find the highest earners, you’d probably start with Toorak and Brighton, maybe toss in Albert Park and certainly plump for Portsea.


You probably wouldn’t be thinking of Tynong, a tiny town about 70 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.


Tynong, nestled in the rolling green hills of Gippsland, is in the same league, financially, as Toorak, Brighton and Portsea.

But according to the Australian Taxation Office, people who live in the postcode which takes in that tiny Gippsland town have an average taxable income of $115,581, making it Victoria’s ninth-highest-earning postcode by that measure.


“I’m surprised,” said Krzysztof Marian Bielecki, manager at the town’s general store, when reached by phone Thursday.


“I don’t belong to those people.”
