Ipswich’s demographics and Christmas wrapping could be to blame for the city’s almost-failed recycling program, mayor Andrew Antoniolli says.

On April 18, Ipswich City Council revealed it would send all recycling to landfill, blaming a breakdown in negotiations with an operator, which was asking for $2 million more, and because of a high “contamination rate”, with 52 per cent of materials placed in yellow-top bins unsuitable for recycling.

However, two days later, Cr Antoniolli said a short-term contractor could be appointed, and recycling could resume.

It is expected Ipswich will sign that short-term contract on Tuesday, but the city will need to get its contamination rate down to less than 25 per cent, or the loads will be rejected.

Brisbane’s contamination rate is about 7 to 10 per cent.
