Rhys Jones travel tales full of surprises

This is something Griff Rhys Jones knows well. The veteran British comedian, who came to prominence as part of the rising alternative comedy scene of the ’80s as part of duo Alas Smith and Jones and seminal satirical TV show Not The 9 O’Clock News, has spent much of the latter part of his career as a travel journalist.

On programs for the BBC, ITV and as a writer for London’s Telegraph, Rhys Jones has travelled the world over the past decade, becoming, in his words, one of those “middle-aged men who go around the country pointing at things”.

While the first half of Rhys Jones’ show is based around his experiences working on these programs, it’s the stuff that never made it to air – when things went wrong – that bring the laughs.

But in the second half of the show, Rhys Jones did away with the slides and focused on more personal experiences. It was here that his wit and talent as a storyteller truly shone, elevating mundane but relatable topics like pets, medical examinations and modern hotels.

The key to Rhy Jones’ comedy is his ability to build up a story in a particular direction, only to pull the rug out from under the audience with a surprise punchline.
