Foley accusation sets stage for ugly election

Both sides of politics in NSW are desperate. The Coalition, now with just six seats to spare, is desperate to hang on to government. Labor, which thinks it is in striking distance, is desperate to scrape over the line.

Either could happen in less than five months. But what has become clear in the past fortnight is the race to the finish line is likely to be grubby, where smear campaigns could overshadow policy debate.

The scene was set when Corrections Minister David Elliott stood up in Parliament and surprised everyone by accusing Luke Foley of harassment. Apparently not premeditated, Elliott was able to put on the public record that there was a serious, career-ending cloud over the Opposition Leader.

Foley has denied Elliott’s claims that he harassed a female ABC reporter after a boozy Christmas party in 2016 and the reporter has refused to comment. But Elliott’s accusations, which remain unresolved while the ABC investigates, have other ramifications beyond potentially killing Foley’s leadership.
