Earlier this month, Mr Smith said the profession needed to be held in the same regard as other first responders.
“I’ve seen some horrendous injuries that are self-inflicted, or been inflicted by a prisoner on a prisoner, or a prisoner on a prison officer,” he said.
“I’ve been to the funerals of 12 prison officers in my time in the job that have taken their own lives.
“I work with a fellow that has managed six deaths in custody. Now, that is a traumatic experience if it happens to you once, but when it has happened six times, it can have a massive effect on your subconscious.”
Last year, the union’s first ever national mental health seminar for prison officers was held in Perth.
