Melburnians will once again be able to warm their hands and palates along the mouth of the Yarra when the Docklands Firelight Festival returns for its second year.

The festival drew crowds of more than 30,000 people to the city’s harbour-side precinct when it made its debut in 2017. City of Melbourne has now confirmed the event will be an annual affair.

Councillor Kevin Louey said he expected this year’s event to be three times the size of last year’s festival.

“This year we’re thinking big, with all of Victoria Harbour set to be transformed into a warm and inviting stage,” he said. “We’ll have nightly pyrotechnics, flame jets, fire drums, roving performers and incredible musicians alongside some of the best food Melbourne has to offer.”

Melbourne artist Christian Patton, who specialises in timber construction and carving, has once again been commissioned for the festival. This time around, he will create three wooden sculptures. The giant sun dial, hand and sun god will then be cast adrift in Victoria Harbour and set alight.
