Funeral parlour plans laid to rest in wake of residents' protest

“As the funeral parlour is a place for mourning, it will bring negative energies such as sadness and sorrow to the surrounding area which will lead to mental stress to the residents and that is why these facilities should be located away from residential zones,” one resident’s submission said.

“A funeral parlour should not be built right next to and directly facing residential homes and in a residential street where access to the funeral parlour will require direct access through the residential street,” wrote another resident.

The council rejected the application on Thursday.

Cr Quirk said the council undertook a comprehensive assessment of the proposal but found the noise impacts, loss of existing vegetation and the increase in on-site car parking would not be consistent with the community’s expectations.

“The proposed site layout would have also seen vehicles using Chester Street, a narrow suburban street, to access the proposed 61 on-site car parks,” he said.
