“This notion of your ‘brand’ … Someone once said to me, ‘Oh that will be good for your brand’. I said, ‘I’m a person. I don’t do brand’. It’s totally offensive to be considered that way.


“Every now and then you have to put the specifics of the game aside and gather an attitude that covers a lot more. From the opening round, we said those are the sort of players we want. In the end, the players we’ve gone with picked themselves.”


In other words, no dickheads.


Fittler’s predecessor, Laurie Daley, is too honourable to reveal publicly how some players let him down during last year’s series but let’s just say it’s no coincidence that Josh Dugan, Blake Ferguson and even Andrew Fifita, who said he’d be prepared to play games one and two and was being considered, did not get picked.
