The Lancet also warned of the emerging and contentious condition ‘opioid-induced hyperalgesia’, in which the drugs themselves cause pain.


“I’m quite convinced most doctors don’t know anything about this,” Professor Myles said.


“If you’re not aware that in fact the opioids are causing the pain, then you give them more opioids, the pain gets worse, so you give them more … they end up in a dependence state,” he said.
