Athiri continues Godolphin's two-year-old Sydney Saturday success

READ MORE “She did everything I asked her to do and she was very willing for me. I’ve ridden some nice ones for [Godolphin]. That horse Tassort I’ve trialled and ridden in work, and he’s really nice. They all go by nicknames, but there are a handful with a lot of quality and depth.” For all of Waller’s success, two-year-olds are raced sparingly for the giant stable. Remarkably, Pressday, Press Statement and The Autumn Sun remain his only group 1 two-year-old winners. Accession jagged second, two lengths behind Athiri, and is likely to push on to $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) in a fortnight, while Krameric, who finished sixth, is likely to fly the flag in next month’s $2 million Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast. “I’ve never been in a rush with my two-year-olds,” Waller said. “I haven’t had a Blue Diamond runner, and I’ve only had a couple of Magic Millions and Golden Slipper starte...

Ellerm-Norton takes care of unfinished business with L'Etape victory

READ MORE While his form is a boost ahead of the national road title in Ballarat next month, the win was not entirely a surprise for the Sydney cyclist. “I knew the guys who were riding today which helps out a lot,” he said.  “It’s a bit more of a known quantity going in.” Ellerm-Norton took off on the brutal Beloka climb to establish a lead over Coyle, who was quicker up Beloka than Tour de France champion Chris Froome last year. “When I saw he was under a little bit of pressure going up the Beloka climb, I thought it would be worthwhile to keep on pushing on and just put him on the back foot,” he said. G20 'family photo': Women representation at an all time low

Image
READ MORE This year’s photo had the smallest number of female heads of state in the history of G20 group photos. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was absent after her plane suffered from mechanical faults. The reduced presence points to a dip in female representation of world leaders amongst the G20 membership of industrialised nations. Leader summits have been held since 2008. British Prime Minister Theresa May and International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde were notable for their non-navy coloured suits. At two, that amounts to the lowest number of female leaders since 2010. The highest number was five in 2012 and 2013. Female representation in the G20 ‘family photo’ over the decade: 2018 – 2 (British Prime Minister May, IMF managing director Lagarde) 2017 – 4 (German Chancellor Angela Merkel, May, Lagarde, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg) 2016 – 4 (Merkel, May, Lagarde, South Korea President Park Geun-hye) 2015 – 4 (Merkel, Laga...

Bush – the upper-crust war hero-turned-oilman and diplomat who steered America through the end of the Cold War as president and led a political dynasty that saw his son win the White House – died Friday. He was 94.  George W. Bush called his father a “man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for,” in a statement announcing his death.  “The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.” Bush’s passing comes just months after the death in April of his wife and revered first lady Barbara Bush – his “most beloved woman in the world” – to whom he was married for 73 years. The 41st American president was a foreign policy realist who navigated the turbulent but largely peaceful fall of the Soviet Union in 1989 and assembl...

Digital licences now available to Sydney's eastern suburbs residents

READ MORE Residents of eastern suburbs postcodes 2022, 2024, 2026, 2031 and 2034 are eligible to take part in the trial, however will still be required to carry their plastic driver licence card. Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello said the digital licences are more secure than their plastic counterparts thanks to blockchain technology platform ‘TrustGrid”, provided by Australian firm Secure Logic. “Smartphones have become de facto wallets and we’re using cutting edge technology so that drivers can use a digital licence in everyday scenarios,” Mr Dominello said. “The DDL is hosted securely on the new Service NSW app, locks with a PIN and can be accessed offline. “It will provide additional levels of security and protection against identity fraud, compared to the plastic driver licence.” Article source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/sbsnews-topstories/~3/W8RcEdQNLug/no-need-for-a-flu-shot-if-you-have-jesus-trump-s-...

Virat Kohli: 'A passionate robot with single-minded determination'

READ MORE When he has failed, as he did in his younger years in Australia and England, he shrewdly and meticulously learnt and returned as a mighty, almost impenetrable threat. The last time he was in Australia, Kohli left with 692 runs at 86.25 with four centuries in four Tests. This year in England, he thumped 593 at 59.3, altering his technique in a bid to counter the swinging ball. At 30, he returns to Australia as the No.1 ranked batsman in the world, at the peak of his powers and ready to pose an extraordinary number of questions to a frontline attack of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon. Replay Replay Video He will also be keen to make amends for his poor form last year against Australia, when the tourists held him to 46 runs at 9.2 in five innings before he conceded to injury. While that was on Indian soil, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood and Cummins should be able to take confidence from at least having dismissed him once each in that series, having him caug...

Former Olympic volleyballer Rachel Uren wants to find next gen in ACT

READ MORE “I didn’t start until I was 16 when I was at college and a teacher noticed I was tall. I was rowing at the time so the choice was 5am freezing cold starts on the lake or indoor in a gym with friends, so I made the transition quite easily. “I made ACT teams then got a scholarship leading up to the 2000 Olympics. I was the only Canberra girl on the team and now I’ve finished it’s about sharing my passion with kids because a lot of haven’t heard of or played volleyball like I hadn’t.” Uren said both indoor and beach volley are becoming more popular and believes there could be some ACT players at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “There’s junior trials coming up soon for the Australian junior beach volleyball tournament. It’s getting bigger, Canberra was a bit behind other states but we have better facilities now and have a chance of getting more teams in,” Uren said. “Some of the kids I first started coachi...

The 1991 Gulf War stoked his popularity. But Bush would acknowledge that he had trouble articulating “the vision thing,” and he was hau...

Bush   sadly died on Nov. 30 — only seven months after the death of his beloved wife, Barbara Bush .   But instead of focusing on that tragedy, let’s remember his amazing life, both in office and out. READ MORE “I’m 48-9 and a few of those fights I could have won. I beat some of the best fighters in the world. A lot of people talk trash now but that’s all good, this is their chance to celebrate. But nothing will get me down, I’m a positive thinker and a positive person,” Mundine said. “I accept it [the result] as a man and it couldn’t have happened to a better guy than Jeff. Good luck to them. I think he can [challenge for another title]. He’s like [US welterweight] Shawn Porter, he...

'Something hasn’t gone to plan': Subiaco bar suffers minor damage in suspected arson

READ MORE But as the bar was full of flammable materials such as liquor and part of a larger building housing other businesses — including the Nova radio studios on the floor above — Senior Constable Pollock said the situation could have turned out much worse. “There’s fire marks on the floor and minimal damage to furnishings — chairs, stools — but no structural damage whatsoever,” he said. “At this stage there is CCTV in the premises … we’re unable to access that at this time so in the meantime we’re appealing to the public.” Senior Constable Pollock described the attempted arson as “very random, very amateur”; the alleged arsonists broke into the bar through a rear glass door but the fire didn’t take hold. “The actual fire is minimal — something hasn’t gone to plan,” he said. Why does energy-rich WA need to frack?

READ MORE But if domestic gas prices remain low, new reserves may not be developed and supply may not meet demand in the medium to long term, it said. Mines Minister Bill Johnston said the pending shortage was a fact, with Woodside’s North West Shelf in decline. “Figures show there’s a potential shortage in the mid-2020s,” Mr Johnston said. “That isn’t to say that, at the time, there won’t be other fields in production but at the moment, on approved projects, there is a gap.” Rod Campbell, research director at The Australia Institute, says it’s outrageous WA could find itself with a potential domestic gas shortage, despite its 15 per cent reservation policy. Renegades ready to break WBBL finals drought

READ MORE “That’s the clear goal, [to be] the first Renegades team to play in the finals,” Coyle said. “We believe that our list is good enough. It’s about executing plans … we need to win some games, get some momentum, and hang onto that for as long as we can. “But we’ve got a really good blend now of experience and exciting young players. We’ll go out and play hopefully a really exciting brand of cricket. That’s the goal. Let’s hope that’s good enough. But there are some really good signs.” With New Zealand tearaway Lea Tahuhu, experienced and lively spinner Molly Strano, Wareham, Molineux, captain Amy Satterthwaite, Maitlan Brown and the spin of Danni Wyatt, the Renegades have no shortage of bowling options. The key area in which the Renegades need to improve is their batting. Only Satterthwaite, Molineux and Jess Duffin passed 50 last season, although big-hitting Englishwoman Wyatt, Erica Kershaw, Courtney...

Kyrgios says lighter load and better mental health gives him balance

READ MORE He will lighten his workload in 2019 to give his body and mind time to properly recuperate after admitting to being in “dark places” on the tour this year and seeking help of psychologists . “I just feel like I’ve found out what works for me,” Kyrgios said. “Long schedules away from home, playing unnecessary events and focusing on things that don’t matter to me personally is what drained me this year. “I was in some dark places this year, that’s for sure. When I was on the road, I was in some very dark places. “I know I’ve got to keep my schedule lighter, play the events I want to play and just put my focus on the [NK Foundation], when I think that I only get good vibes. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about and if I can make a difference, then great.” Article source: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/young-magpies-gun-to-sign-contract-extension-20180416-p4z9yn.html?utm_medium=rss...

2000-year-old ring may have been owned by Pontius Pilate, say experts

READ MORE One of the New Testament’s most infamous characters, he presided at Christ’s trial but was said to have washed his hands to symbolise that he abdicated responsibility for the crucifixion. The ring was originally unearthed in the late Sixties at Herodium (also known as Herodian), a fortress and palace built by King Herod in the desert near Bethlehem. It was one of hundreds of artefacts that came to light, including glass objects, pottery and coins. A team of academics, including archeologists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, think the ring belonged to Pontius Pilate himself. “I don’t know of any other Pilatus from the period and the ring shows he was a person of stature and wealth,” Danny Schwartz, a professor of Jewish history, told Haaretz newspaper. Roi Porat, the director of a new phase of digging at Herodium, who ordered the detailed analysis of the ring, told The Times of Israel that while he did not want to jump to conclusions, ...
