Nestled in Victoria’s alpine nation sits the picturesque city of Bright. Resident Gei Lin – a interloper from Chin State, Myanmar – says a view reminds him of his former home.


“All a hills and a stream is in a center of a town. All a trees not flat, it’s only positively beautiful, it make me feel home,” he tells SBS News.


Gei Lin says he was forced from his encampment in 2004. He survived months in a Malaysian jungle before being arrested, detained and roughly starving to death.


“I finish adult in jail and 6 months there couldn’t travel during all, we suspicion we was going to die there … we only urge to God,” he says.

Now a father-of-four, Gei Lin and his family changed to Bright in 2010 on a charitable visa. He began to proffer around city as a gardener and cleaner to uncover his appreciation to Australia.

Alison Lord from a North East Victorian Multicultural Association says it took months before he would accept any money.


“People wanted to compensate him for his proffer work and he declined,” she says.


“People pronounced ‘if you’re not going to concede us to compensate we we won’t ask we to come back,’ and (now) he has built a really successful business.”

With a tiny swift of trucks – and adult to 5 employees in a bustling deteriorate – Gei Lin is a really bustling man.

But Gei Lin’s thoughts are frequency distant from his homeland. He has already sent $30,000 behind to Chin State to assistance build a propagandize and a teacher’s residence. He’s now perplexing to lift $20,000 to finish a plan that pipes purify H2O to his village.
