If Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks weren’t spectacular enough, they will now feature a special firework display co-designed by Hugh Jackman.

The 2017 display will feature eight tonnes of fireworks, 13,000 shells and 30,000 shooting comets including a cascading rainbow to celebrate Australia’s ‘yes’ vote for marriage equality.

Also part of the explosive spectacular will be a dazzling, gold display developed by Jackman with fireworks director Fortunato Foti.

“My dad used to take me and my brothers and my sisters to watch the fireworks, so for me this is a very, very amazing day,” the Hollywood actor told reporters when making the announcement in Sydney on Friday.

“I was invited about eight years ago to be involved with the fireworks but I couldn’t be here and I regretted it so much that I actually invited myself this year.”

His display, which he says was only 10 per cent his idea, will feature gold and silver fireworks which will explode in the sky for about 20 seconds.

It will be launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge off six pontoons and another six barges around the harbour.

It will be set to the song Wiyathul, by one of the most renowned Indigenous musicians Dr G Yunupingu.

“In the midst of a lot of colour, sound and celebration, I would like to describe it as 20 seconds of beauty, reflection and a little moment of peace amongst all that,” Jackman said.

The entire display will feature 28,000 fireworks shot from 175 firing points on the Sydney Harbour Bridge – 3,000 more than previous years, making it the biggest Sydney Harbour Bridge display on record.

“(The fireworks) always send a message that Sydney is a stunning city with a beautiful climate and a wonderful harbour, but most importantly we’re a harmonious community and we’re multicultural,” City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“Every year we’re concerned about it being a safe event and for 13 years I have been mayor, it has been an incredibly safe event.”
