A father has died and his son and a friend were injured after their boat was swamped by waves and capsized in waters south of Sydney.

The five metre boat capsized after several waves crashed over it off Cape Solander off Kurnell on Friday morning, according to police.

While two men, aged 47 and 61, were able to swim to shore and raise the alarm of the fishing incident, a 73-year-old man was found dead in the water a short time later.

The two men are in a stable condition with one suffering a severed thumb, NSW Police say.

Police, who believe the men were not wearing life jackets, say CPR was given to the 73-year-old, but he could not be revived.
